LAHORE Governor Punjab Salman Taseer hosted a reception in honour of Pakistan tennis hero Aisamul Haq Qureshi at the Governors House on Thursday awarded him gold medal. Aisams parents, brother, sister and relatives were present on the occasion along with several political and government figures. The Governor awarded half a million rupees to Aisam along with the gold medal. In an emotional address, Aisam said he was following in his grandfathers footsteps, and even though he lost in the final of the US Open, he felt it was no less than a win. All my life Ive tried to do something to make my country and my parents proud. Its been a long tough journey. I want to thank my relatives, friends and family for being with me through my ups and downs. One should never give up on dreams, he said. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Punjab Salman Taseer lauded the efforts of Aisam and praised his family for their untiring support to their son, which he termed as the son of the nation. He has made the entire country proud and we hope he will keep us providing such moments of joy, he added. Aisam said that he wanted the youngsters to follow him and raise the countrys flag in the world. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has urged Aisam to play charity matches for the flood-affected people and said the government would provide all out facilities in this regard. Aisam, who sealed a historic record of playing two finals in grand slam US Open, met the Chief Minister at his residence in Model Town who congratulated Aisam on his impeccable performance in the US Open. Shahbaz remarked Aisam was national hero and the entire nation was proud of him as he put up an excellent show and made the entire country proud. The government of Punjab will take up all measures to boost tennis across the province and ace player Aisam would be consulted in this connection, the CM stressed. Aisam said the prayers of the entire nation backed him in his great feat.
