Violence feared during Karachi by-election

KARACHI The atmosphere of violence that gripped the City last month in which several people were killed and a large number of properties ransacked, is again looming large as by-election of PS-24 coming nearer. The constituency located in the West Zone of Karachi, a highly sensitive area of the City which witnessed wide-range of violence during recent violent episodes in which around 50 people were killed alone and over 150 injured. The by The violence erupted after the assassination of MQMs MPA Raza Haider which claimed over 125 lives in a week. Total 165 cases were registered while 170 lawbreakers were booked across the City. In West Zone, some 85 FIRs were lodged and some 70 people were arrested. The said constituency of the Sindh Assembly comprised on heterogeneous population where Urdu and Pushto speaking people dominate. The constituency is highly controversial and sensitive due to its geographical conditions where majority of the Urdu-speaking people residing in the middle of the Pukhtoon dominated areas. The vacant seat of PS-94 is mostly dominated by Urdu speaking population of Orangi Town number 4, 10, 11 and 11/1. Pukhtoon remains present in the surroundings of the constituency where Fareed Colony, Faiz-e-Aam Colony, Faqir Colony and area of Metroville. Residents of Orangi Town while talking to The Nation told that the area is dominated by Urdu-speaking population and nobody can able to defeat MQM in the said constituency. People of the area further pinpoint that there is no need of rigging because the area is completely dominated by MQM therefore the chances of violence is no more from the side of MQM. There are thousands of Pukhtoon residing in the above said areas but most of them are not registered voters of Karachi as they registered themselves in their hometowns. It is pertinent to mention here that ethnic violence in the said area witnessed in the history of the city while in last violence some 25 people have been killed in Orangi Town and many others were killed in the surroundings areas of Orangi. Fear, tension and skirmishes are now a routine matter. People of both sides have shifted their businesses to other areas and even avoid unnecessary visits to rivals dominated areas.
