KARACHI - Political parties on Friday condemned the procedure of arrest of Opposition Leader in Sindh Assembly Khwaja Izhar ul Hassan at the hands of encounter specialist and suspended SSP Rao Anwar from his residence in Bufferzone.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif telephoned Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah to probe the issue and said that arrest of an elected member without prior approval of speaker was illegal.

“Strict action should be taken against the concerned officer if proved guilty,” he said adding that supremacy of law should be ensured at all levels and at all costs.

The chief minister informed the prime minister that initially some police officers were suspended over the issue and further investigations were made to reveal the truth behind the incident. Speaking to media, PTI leader Imran Ismail denounced the arrest of senior MQM leader. “I strongly condemn the manner in which Khawaja Izhar was taken into custody,” Ismail said adding that if they wanted to arrest Khawja Izhar, they should have first produced his arrest warrant.

“This was simply police hooliganism,” he said.

PML-F leader Nusrat Sehr Abbasi said that Sindh Assembly Speaker should have been informed first before the arrest.

Taking a swipe at the ruling PPP, she said that the Sindh government was being controlled from Dubai.

Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani said that he had no knowledge of the incident and only came through this information through news channels.

He said that he would write to the chief secretary to investigate into the issue as to how the opposition leader was taken into custody without prior approval from the speaker Sindh Assembly.

JI Karachi Chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said that no one is above the law but the procedure adopted in case of arresting Khwaja Izharul Hassan was unacceptable.

He said that a police officer should not have arrested an elected member of the assembly in such a manner. “Now it is a test for the chief minister as to how long he will continue to implement suspension orders of Rao Anwer,” he said adding that JI is a peaceful organization and had always opposed law violations of any type.
