ISLAMABAD - The Information Ministry recommended 3 senior officers to the Prime Minister’s Office for appointment as press secretary to the PM, The Nation has learnt.

According to sources, the ministry recommended Zahida Perveen, a garde-21 officer and DG Information Academy, Jahangir Iqbal, DG Cyber Wing and Mashera Shahid, DG Electronic Media and Publications to the Secretary to the PM Azam Khan for appointment as press secretary to the PM.

They said that Zahida Perveen and Jahangir were the strongest candidates to get the slot but Zahida had an edge of seniority. They said that senior officials of the ministry had strongly recommended Zahida for this assignment.

The post of press secretary to the PM is lying vacant from September 18, 2015 after the retirement of Muhammad Naeem, a grade-21 officer of Information group.

A senior officer of the Ministry of Information said that transfers and postings in the ministry would be made next week. He said that appointment of MD APP, MD PTV and DG Radio Pakistan would also be made within two weeks. He said that appointment of press secretary to the President and the Press Information Officer are also in the pipeline.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhary had earlier said that heads of attached departments of Ministry of Information including PTV, Radio Pakistan and APP would be appointed on merit and there would be no compromise on editorial policy of these organisations.

He had said that the PTI government strongly believed in merit and Prime Minster Imran Khan had given direction to make appointments on merit and evaluate the performances of institutions after every 3 months.

The federal cabinet has given approval of appointment of board of directors and MD PTV.
