The energy crisis in Pakistan has become so serious that the very unity of the country is now threatened if one is to believe some analysts. One wonders is this crisis real or artificial? The record shows that in June 2007, the power sector was producing 14000 MW of electricity but within a little more than a year, the production went down to 10000 MW (reference Musharrafs farewell speech of 18.08.08). The same generation figure is being projected even today i. e. after almost three years. One wonders where are these 4000 MW gone? Experts on various TV channels say the crisis is 'man made. They think the mounting circular debt is the factor responsible. Another reason could be the increasing line losses. Lastly, the river water shortage has caused a drop in hydro power generation and that coupled with increase in population and the mounting electricity consumption because of it has cooked our goose. The lack of vision at the government level and corruption have also played a role. Why cant they accept offer from brotherly Iran? Why has Kalabagh dam been shelved and no effort being made for building a consensus among provinces on it? -MOHAMMED ALI JAWAID, Karachi, April 16.
