OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE - An Additional District and Sessions Judge on Wednesday framed charges against four police officials, including DSP Riasat Bajwa, in the Shahbaz Butt encounter case. Shahbaz, a robber caught (by area men) on the sight (of crime) was shot dead by the cops in the staged encounter on the bank of the Rohi Nulla some two months ago. On Wednesday, the accused persons, including the key accused DSP Riasat, SI Muhammad Riaz and two constables, were produced in the court of ADSJ Sheraz Kayani, who framed charges against them and adjourned the hearing till August 24. The judge also ordered the production of witnesses on the next date of hearing. According to the case minutes, Shahbaz Butt and two other robbers had stormed into Makkah Medical Store, situated in Yuhanabad. During the robbery attempt, they made a Rs.35,000 booty. The store owner showed some rare bravery by engaging the robbers in a scuffle with Shahbaz. In the meantime, two other robbers fled away taking the looted items with them. Shahbaz resorted to aerial firing. However, the owner succeeded in capturing him. Later two Muhafiz Squad bikes arrived at the scene. SI Riaz also reached there and took Shahbaz with him. He was later killed in the encounter. Principal Chuhang Police Training School DIG Major (r) Mubashirullah afterwards held an inquiry into the encounter on the orders of the Punjab police chief and found the encounter as fake. Resultantly, a case was registered under sections 302/34 and 109 of PPC against the four aforementioned police officials. Earlier, ADSJ Sheraz Kayani had ordered the attested photo copies of the case record on the demand of accused party. Hearing another case, Additional District and Sessions Judge Sheraz Kayani on Wednesday directed SSP Investigation of Lahore to arrest and produce Qila Gujjar Singh SHO and one of his subordinates, a Sub-Inspector, for not complying with the court orders.
