BAHAWALPUR - An Assistant Sub-Inspector tortured a man to death on the behest of a money-lender and later attempted to paint the incident as a suicide by hanging the body at the factory of the money-lender.

The daughters and wife of the deceased unfurled the mystery to the media here on Friday.  According details, Nusrat Bibi, wife of the deceased, told The Nation that the former BVH Emergency director Dr Muhammad Aslam Sheikh lent Rs3.5 million to Muhammad Babar Tufail, a resident of Kasur, on interest. However, after sometime Babar Tufail stopped payment of interest due to his financial hardships. At which ASI Abdul Waheed of the Kotwali Police on the behest Dr Aslam arrested Babar from his house,” she claimed.

She said that the ASI tortured him severely which eventually resulted in his death. Later, they staged a drama by recovering the body from the factory of Dr Aslam.

Nusrat Bibi questioned that when the police arrested her husband from his house who the body was recovered the factory, adding that it clearly indicated that her husband was tortured to death.

Following the incident, DPO Sohail Habib Tajik suspended both SHO Akram Shah and ASI Abdul Waheed besides arresting the latter.

A case was also registered under Section 302 PPC against Dr Aslam and the ASI. Meanwhile, co-accused Dr Aslam secured a bail-before-arrest till August 28.

Meanwhile, members of the bereaved attacked the Kotwali Police Station and ransacked furniture.

Talking to The Nation, the DPO said that he had constituted a three member committee under the supervision of SP (Investigations) Azhar Hameed Gujjar which was comprised of DSP City Arif Rasheed and DSP Legal Jameel Akhtar Chohan which would ferret out the facts and submitted a report him.

He pointed out that the body had been sent for autopsy and only its report would ascertain whether it was a suicide incident or ‘murder’.
