Demi Lovato is urging fans to crown her the first winner of the Best Lyric Video prize at this month’s MTV Video Music Awards.
The 21-year-old pop star featured her legion of followers, dubbed Lovatics, in the music video for her upbeat single Really Don’t Care. The clip earned her a nomination for Best Lyric Video at the August 24 ceremony.
But facing stiff competition from 5 Seconds of Summer, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande in the new socially-voted category, the star took to Twitter at the weekend to urge her 23.9 million followers to vote. ‘Brazilian Lovatics - you’re staring in my lyric video!!!! Wanna win a VMA with me? votedemilovato,’ she tweeted. Demi released the video for Really Don’t Care back in May.
The three-and-a-half minute clip, which also celebrated the one-year anniversary of the release of her self-titled fourth album, featured fans lip-synching and dancing to the track, and some getting the shock of their lives as she surprised them while joining in the fun. The track also features British songstress Cher Lloyd. Demi spoke to MTV News last year about collaborating with the singer, admitting it took a family effort to make the collaboration happen.
‘Well first of all, my mum loves Cher Lloyd and my little sister loves Cher Lloyd. And I love her too,’ Demi said at the time. ‘She has so much sass and attitude. They were really wanting me to do a duet with her. And so I was thinking, ‘Who else would be more fun to do a collaboration with than a powerful, sassy, attitude-filled girl?’ And there’s just nobody else out there. She fit perfectly on that song.’ The MTV Video Music Awards will be held in Los Angeles, California.
