LAHORE - Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) officials have arrested a PIA official allegedly involved in facilitating narcotics smugglers through national airlines planes.

Iqbal Ghurki, serving in PIA security section, was arrested by ANF because he was facing allegations that he was involved in heroin smuggling. However, a PIA spokesman claimed that after the recent incidents of attempted drug smuggling in PIA aircraft, the Security and Vigilance Department of the airline carried out an in-house exercise to scrutinize the conduct of its staff members.

In view of the findings, several employees have been re-shuffled while a few have been handed over to agencies for formal investigation.

A PIA officer, seeking anonymity, said that Ghurki was arrested some seven days back but his news of arrest surfaced after a week.

He was of the view that due to repeated incidents of heroin seizures on PIA planes at different airports of the country, different quarters had raised eye brows. After that, management took action and handed over their employees to different agencies for interrogation.
