The neglected land

Gilgit Baltistan has always been known around the world for its beauty, hospitality, kindness, faithfulness and peaceful culture. However, now, this area is losing popularity.

Since the last few years, right after the self-governance ordinance was passed by People’s Party’s government; many other political parties are showing their interest in the region. Almost every party has now established their political setup in the region. The people of GB have not shown any resistance to them.

In 2009, the Govt. of Pakistan promised to provide greater political empowerment and better governance to the people of Gilgit Baltistan. However, no measures have been taken in this direction. The land is now confronting many serious problems. Unemployment among the poor prevails in the region. The rich are able to get good jobs based on their personal contacts. Poverty is growing. The government needs to turn some attention to this region.

SHAHZAD KARIM,
