LAHORE - The 112th Annual Sports of the Government College University Lahore Friday commenced here at a grand inaugural ceremony at the university ground.
About 3000 students from 26 departments of GCU Lahore took part in the ceremony marked by a grand march past, sports day oath and athletics meet. Institute of Bio-technology bagged the prestigious trophy of the best march past contingent while Department of English stood second. The department of Statistics, owing to their discipline and uniformity, adjudicated third. The GCU athletes, led by GCU 111th Annual Sports record-holder (long jump) Adnan Jahangir, took oath that they would take part in annual games abiding by the rules and in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of sports and the honour of their teams. The musicians hailing from GCU Nazir Ahmed Music Society (NAMS) this year presented a special anthem for 112th GCU Athletics Meet.
In his message on the annual sports, GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr M Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said: “Sports make students better human being and it teaches tolerance and encourages the spirit of competitiveness. Sportsmanship is more important than winning an event.”
Later, the first day of the annual sports event was marked by 800 meters race which was won by Geography Department student M Wasim Sajid by covering the distance in 2:05:78 seconds. Sadique Akbar came victorious in 3000 meters race. In 200 meters race, Tariq Mehmood secured the first position. Long jump event was won by Adnan Jahangir. Saad Ali Hassan of Urdu Department bagged gold medal in shotput. Department of Urdu Department student Moshin Naveed brought victory to his department in 110m hurdle race. Qasim Ali won the high jump event, whereas Altaf Hussain secured the top spot in javelin throw. The main event of the day was 4x100 meters relay race which was won by the Intermediate students. GCU Director Sports Prof Khadim Ali Khan congratulated the winners of GCU 112th Annual Athletics Meet and hoped to see more sports activities coming in their way.
The closing ceremony to be held tomorrow (Sunday) and will be graced by Punjab Sports Board Chairman MNA Hamza Shahbaz Sharif as a chief guest.
