Justice Jilani to succeed Justice Chaudhry as CJP


ISLAMABAD - After the retirement of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in the end of this year, seven judges of the Supreme Court would become Chief Justices of Pakistan, while seven would not reach this august post.
According to the seniority list of Supreme Court of Pakistan, Tassadque Hussain Jillani, Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa and Justice Gulzar Ahmed would become the Chief Justice of Pakistan, if no extra-constitutional step taken by the establishment as that of past.
Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, Justice Ameer Hani Muslim, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Athar Saeed and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed would be unlucky in this regard.
After the retirement of Justice Tariq Pervaiz on obtaining superannuation, there are 14 judges, besides Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who will retire on 13 December 2013. Following the Justice Chaudhry's retirement Justice Gulzar Ahmed from Sindh province would be the Chief Justice of Pakistan for the longest time, while Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, who is from Punjab would remain chief justice for the shortest time.
Justice Tassadque Jilani would the next chief justice after the retirement of Justice Chaudhry. He would take the charge on December 12, 2013. Justice Jilani, who belongs to Multan and a close relative of former Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Yusuf Gilani, in view of the relationship had excused sitting in a bench that heard case against the ex-PM. He would retire on 6 July 2014.
Following his retirement a SC judge from Khyber Pukhtoonkhawa, Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk would be the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. He would remain the CJP for 13 months and 10 days. His term as CJP would expire on 16th August 2015.
After Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja would be the Chief Justice for short duration. He would be the Chief Justice of the apex court for only 23 days, and would retire on September 9, 2015. After him Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, who belongs to Sindh, would become the chief justice. He would be the CJP for one year, three months and 21 days. The honourable judge would retire on 30th December 2016.
Justice Saqib Nisar on the retirement of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali would become the Chief Justice of Pakistan for two years and 18 days, and would retire on January 17, 2019. After Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa would take the charge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He would be the Chief Justice for 11 months and three days, and would retire on 20th December 2019.
After the retirement of Justice Khosa on 20th December, 2019 the next Chief Justice would be Justice Gulzar Ahmed. He would be the Chief Justice for two years, one months and 14 days. He would retire from his post on 1st February 2022.
