QUETTA - Authorities said they have found bodies of four members of a polio vaccination team who were kidnapped by militants in Zhob district on last Friday.

The victims include two polio vaccinators and two security personnel. They were coming back to the city of Zhob after taking part in an immunisation campaign when suspected militants kidnapped them. Their bodies were discovered Tuesday. The bodies were brought to District Headquarters Zhob for postmortem amid tight security. A large number of people gathered at the hospital to mourn the killings. The authorities said that attacks on polio vaccinators within the past four years have left nearly 70 people dead in the country, including security personnel escorting the teams during national immunisation drives. The violence has undermined anti-polio efforts in the country, where more than 85 percent of the world’s cases were located last year, the World Health Organisation said.

In the meantime, the Balochistan government postponed the anti-polio campaign in Quetta, Zhob, Sherani and Sibi districts of the province. The campaign was postponed due to looming security threats, an officer of the health department, who declined to be named. The Balochistan health department had established teams to administer polio drops to children below the age of five years in the aforesaid four districts.
