KARACHI - City Mayor Wasim Akhtar said on Saturday that monitoring committees had been formed at the district level to monitor the affairs of graveyards and ensure their better maintenance.

“Registration of grave diggers, watchmen and gardeners has been made mandatory under new rules. Cleaning and tree plantation will be done at all graveyards and full and proper monitoring along with checking of record of graveyards will be ensured,” he said while reviewing arrangements for betterment of KMC graveyards and issuing necessary directives in this regard.

Following directives of the city mayor, the relevant department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has issued orders for establishment of a provisional city graveyard committee and district graveyard monitoring committee headed by the mayor Karachi and the metropolitan commissioner, respectively.

The provisional city graveyard committee chaired by the city mayor will have graveyards director as its secretary and metropolitan commissioner, director of municipal services, DMC chairman and a representative of Edhi Trust as its members. The district graveyard monitoring committee chaired by the metropolitan commissioner will have director for graveyards as its secretary and representative of the city mayor, DMC municipal commissioner, district health officer, director for land and deputy director for graveyard as members. According to terms of reference, the Provisional City Graveyard Committee will have the function of preparing monitoring policies of existing graveyards.

The District Graveyard Monitoring Committee will have to monitor the graveyards located within the district and issue instructions for proper look after of graveyards and tree plantation.
