I would like to draw the attention of your readers, columnist, anchorpersons, intellectuals and lawyers to a very powerful legal tool against corruption. That is the "right of access to information law or freedom of information law". We can all start a campaign for implementation of this law in Pakistan and if successful, in getting it on statute books, we would have a powerful tool for minimizing corruption very easily. I recall this law being introduced once as an ordinance but it was subsequently not passed by the parliament. As constitutional amendments are now imminent after an overall agreement on 17th amendment, I would request all individuals who have any say anywhere to start a vigorous campaign for legislation of this law at the earliest. Once the process and procedure of 'things done in offices' is known to the common citizens through the press, the corruption would have no way to exist. This is the right time to strike at right place to make the system transparent. It would add to the efforts of the superior judiciary's crusade against corruption. -DR ABID RAUF ORAKZAI, Islamabad, January 15.
