LAHORE – Punjab Excise and Taxation Department Director General Hamayun Mazhar Sheikh framed charge sheet against 14 inspectors while issued show cause notices to 8 other Assistant Excise and Taxation Officers (AETOs) on their poor performance, negligence, inefficiency and misconduct Thursday, said sources in E&T.

A senior officer seeking anonymity said proceedings would be started against these officers under the Punjab Employees Efficiency Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act, 2006. He said inspectors were charge sheeted while the AETOs were issued only show cause notices on showing poor performance in collection of property and professional taxes.

Among the professional tax inspectors included, Muhammad Amin Tabassum, Malik Muhammad Azeem, Musharraf Saeed, Khlaid Mehmood, Mian Naeem Anjum and Muhammad Naeem.

Among the property tax inspectors included, Muhamamd Rafique, Muhamamd Arshad, Malik Zahid, Maqsood Ahmad, Rana Iftikhar Ahmad, Zahid Mehmood Malik, Kamran Ali shah and Muhamamd Azam.

The AETOs who were issued show cause notices included, Danish Mehmood Khan, Faisal Mohayiud Din, Ch. Muhamamd Waheed, Jamil Khan, Aslam Bhatti, Maqsood Ali Kazmi, Khuram Nazir and Qurban Ali Shah.  Sources claimed that department had given them target to collect property tax but they failed to meet the target. The department had asked them to collect 60 per cent of the target by December 2012, but they could not collect even 50 per cent of the set target.

An officer of the department said an inquiry would be started against these officers under the PEEDA Act.

If charges were found correct during the course of inquiry, the officers could be terminated from service, their service could be confiscated, promotion held, annual increment could be stopped or they could be demoted from their positions, he added.

Talking about poor performance of these officers, sources told this scribe that the inspectors did not collect tax from the owners of the properties for their personal gains, which caused huge loss to the national exchequer.
