KARACHI – Inter-collegiate bilingual declamation contest 2013 was held at Defence Authority Degree College here on Thursday. Students of more than 15 leading educational institutions of the City took part in the contest. Mehtab Akbar Rashidi, former Sindh secretary education, was the chief guest on the occasion. Mehtab Akbar Rashidi said that although the present scenario was depressing but the new generation constitutes ray of hope and optimism for a bright future of the country. She added that students had immense potential and the ability to move forward with determination, vigour and vision to change the destiny of the nation. The chief guest said that oratory was a great art and weapon whose effective use could change the destiny of nations and bring a vivid transformation in the lives of people. She said that declamation contests play an important role in development of personality, confidence and versatility in a person. She added that such literary events inculcate a spirit of competition in students and equip them with the tools to deal with the intricate problems of life effectively. The chief guest appreciated the standard of speeches made by the students. She reiterated that the salvation of the nation lies in promotion of education and enlightenment in society. Earlier, the principal of the college, Siraj Munir said that declamations, debates and discussions provided the students with an effective forum for enlightenment of mind and grooming of leadership qualities. In the English declamation, Zeneerah Saleem of Defence Authority College for Women Ph-VIII secured first position, Beenish Saquib of Bahria College NORE-1 stood second and Faiza Yousuf of Sir Adamjee Institute was declared third. In the Urdu declamation, Muhammad Salman of Bahria College Karsaz stood first, Shaukat Ali of Bahria College NORE-1 got the second position and Maham Munawer of Agha Khan Higher Secondary School was declared third. The overall coveted trophy of the Declamation Contest 2013 was won by Bahria College NORE-1. In the end the chief guest gave away the prizes to the winning teams and distributed certificates amongst the participants of the Declamation Contest. Principal of the college presented a crest of the college to the chief guest.
