MULTAN (PPI) - The Punjab government has finally directed Commissioners and District Coordination Officers (DCOs) to launch a crackdown on sugar hoarders to check the prices of sugar and other essential commodities. Punjab Minister Ehsanuddin Qureshi said here on Saturday that this step was being taken following repeated claims by the federal government and the Ministerial Committee of the Economic Coordination Committee that sufficient quantity of the commodity was available in the country. For this purpose, the DCOs concerned have been instructed to collect information and data regarding sugar hoarders. Several committees and teams constituted last year for the same purpose would be revised to conduct the operation, the sources said. To counter the low yield of sugarcane this year, the Punjab government has been pushing the federal government to import sugar. Punjab government spokesman Senator Pervaiz Rashid told that the provincial government had written many letters to the federal government, requesting it to import sugar in order to avoid a crisis.
