LAHORE - Eidul Fitr will be celebrated across the country today, although in some parts of KP it was celebrated on Friday, showing the failure of the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee to evolve consensus on this important subject of religious importance.

Police have made special security arrangements in view of the threat of terrorism. Since an operation is going on in tribal areas of KP in the north and Karachi in the south, terrorists can target any important place or personality to divert attention. To deal with the situation, the leaves for the police people and security agencies have been cancelled.

In Lahore, Eid prayers will be offered at thousands of mosques and grounds, including the Minar-i-Pakistan lawns and the Qaddafi stadium. However, most people prefer to perform the religious obligation in mosques of their respective localities.

The Punjab governor and chief minister will celebrate Eid in the city. (Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif celebrated in Saudi Arabia on Friday. The premier has been in the kingdom for the past few days. The nikah of his granddaughter was also performed at Masjid-i-Nabvi (Madina) on Thursday.

PPP leaders Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal will celebrate Eid in UAE. Jamaat-i-Islami amir Sirajul Haq celebrated the event in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Dr Tahirul Qadri, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed will celebrate Eid in Lahore, Chaudhry Shujaat Husain will offer Eid prayerin Gujrat while Pervaiz Elahi in London.

Hundreds of thousands of people who are employed in Lahore but have families in other cities have left the metropolis to be able to celebrate the day with their families. As a result, the overcrowding in the city is nowhere to be seen. In fact, roads give a rather deserted look.

The situation will remain the same unless the ‘outsiders’ return to the capital after the five Eid holidays.

On Eid, almost all Muslims visit graveyards to offer fateha for their relatives and friends. Caretakers have cleaned the graveyards, which they do on every Eid and get paid by the visitors. During the rest of the year the situation is not the same.

Florists do a roaring business on this day. They set up their shops near all graveyards to facilitate people to buy flowers for their dead relatives and friends.

Floral shops elsewhere in the city also earn huge profits on this day. The rates of bouquets and rose petals are raised manifold and the buyers pay without much haggling.

The income of bakeries and sweets shops also goes up during the Eid days. They start preparing cakes and sweets days before Eid. There is hardly anybody who doesn’t buy cakes or sweets for relatives and friends. Because of the preparation in bulk, at times their quality is compromised. Even the famous brands fail to maintain quality.

In Lahore, the Punjab Food Authority is active these days to monitor the quality of all eatables, but the staff is not sufficient to check all outlets.

The trend of sending Eid cards is on the decline with the passage of time.

There was a time when even the government departments used to send Eid cards to people. But now emails and text messages serve the same purpose. As a result, this business is expected to vanish in not too distant a future.

The zoo will be an important attraction for the people during the Eid holidays. Although thousands of people visit the zoo every day, the crowds multiply during the Eid holidays. This also means substantial raise in the zoo income.

Places of historical importance like Badshahi Masjid, Shalamar Garden and Minar-i-Pakistan are also thronged by people on this holy day. Rush in parks also goes up.
