ISLAMABAD - The caretaker federal cabinet will review the overall law and order situation in the country on Wednesday (today) besides reviewing security arrangements for July 25 polls in the wake of fresh wave of terror attacks, resulting in massive human losses.

The meeting to be chaired by Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retd) Nasirul Mulk would also examine the decision about the jail trial of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the two remaining corruption references and it is most likely that the notification issued earlier would be altered and the trial may be conducted in the open court (in the jail).

The caretaker federal cabinet would also review the steps taken for containing money-laundering and other requirements and conditions set by FATF to get the country out of the grey-list.

The cabinet would also give approval to the appointment of Banking Court No-2 Lahore judge while approval would also be given to grant additional charge to the chairman Port Qasim Authority.

The caretaker interior minister would give a detailed briefing to the cabinet on the steps taken by the government to combat the menace of terrorism and the security arrangements for smooth and peaceful conduct of the upcoming general election.

The government’s decision for conducting the trial of the two NAB references -- Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investment -- pending against Sharif and other family members will also come under discussion.

Government sources said that the Ministry of Law and Justice’s notification was misconstrued as the trial in the Adiala jail in the remaining two references would be fixed only for security purposes because Sharif’s movement from jail to the Islamabad Courts Complex on a daily basis would be full of security risks, therefore, the decision of holding the trial in Adiala jail premises was made.

The sources said that the trial of Sharif would be in the open court (in the jail) and media persons and select PML-N leaders would be allowed the entry to Adiala jail premises where the proceedings of these references would be held. Special passes would be issued to both media persons and the PML-N leaders as was the practice in the NAB court in Islamabad.

The notification issued on July 13 after the shifting of Sharif and his daughter to Adiala jail read; “In exercise of the powers conferred by subsection (b) of section 16 of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 (XVIII of 1999), the federal government is pleased to specify the Central Jail Adiala, Rawalpindi, to be the place where the Accountability Court-I, Islamabad shall sit for trial of References No. 18/2017 and 19/2017 against Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and others.”
