United States is the land that exports slogans of freedom and liberty to the world. Just last week, Helen Thomas, doyen of the White House press corps, decided to resign. One of the bravest journalists known for asking tough questions few journalists dare to ask, she had been reporting from White House since the Kennedy era. After the Israeli raid on Freedom Flotilla, David Nesenoff of asked Helen Thomas for her comments. She said The Jews should get the hell out of Palestine and go home to Germany, Poland and America. She got a lot of pressure on that comment and, consequently, an apology was published the very next day on her website. She later had to resign. The same Helen Thomas made the following statement while retiring, I deeply regret the comments I made last week regarding Israelis and Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon. Ms Thomas was also criticized for questioning the White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs on Obama administration not condemning the Israeli attack on the freedom flotilla for Gaza. With the resignation of Helen Thomas, one wonders if George Orwell had forgotten 'freedom of expression when he listed his ironic slogans like Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is bliss and War is peace. -UNEZA HAMID, Lahore, June 16.
