ISLAMABAD PPP-led Federal Government, which was facing strong criticism from the opposition during the ongoing budget debate in the National Assembly, Thursday faced another jerk when its own legislator during the debate criticised the government for its economic policies as they, according to him, were adding to the miseries of the already poverty-stricken masses in the country. Taking part in the budget debate, PPP Member Parliament Begum Nasim Akhtar Chaudhry said that the loans such as taken from the IMF were harmful for the future of the country, adding that the inflation had increased in her partys current tenure running the affairs of the country. The governments economic and financial policies had further widened the gap between the rich and poor, she maintained. PPP leader urged the government to get rid of the loans received from IMF as quickly as possible, saying that each Pakistani on the average was having the loan of Rs 35,000 from IMF, which was shameful. Criticising the govts policies, she said that the government should have taken the Parliament into confidence before consulting IMF for loan. The legislator also suggested the government to reduce its expenditures. The PML-N legislator Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, however said that the government should avoid enforcing indirect taxes. He was of the view that with the implementation of the new budget, the government would get Rs 200 billion additional indirect taxes from the masses, which would directly increase to the sufferings of the poor people in the country. Talking about the energy crisis, he suggested that the construction of Kala Bagh Dam was the right way to meet the crisis, while the need was to develop consensus on its construction. Nawab Ali Wasan, while opposing the tax imposition on farmers, said the PPP-led government should never impose tax on the poor agriculturists, as they already pay taxes on different items. Talking on the issue of Kala Bagh Dam, he said the smaller provinces had shpwn concerns over the construction of dam. He added that the Kala Bagh dam issue should be buried once and for all, otherwise it would trigger a new wave of hate among different segments of the society. Chairperson BISP during her speech informed the House that the government was going to introduce an animal trekking system to evade corruption in the dairy farm system to be initiated under Benazir Income Support programme. Sardar Shahjahan Yousuf from PML-Q while participating in the debate said the incumbent government had failed to deliver relief to the masses. Criticising the renaming of NWFP, he said that the province was renamed following the demands of those who had opposed the independence of Pakistan at the time of partition. Meanwhile, when Deputy Speaker asked Shahjahan Yousuf to wind up his speech, he refused but following it, his mike was switched off after that he left the floor. Later, PML-Q members expressing their solidarity with Sardar Shahjahan over the issue left the floor of the House and joined it after a while. Others who took part in the debate included Shagufta Sadiq, Mian Javed Latif, Dr Lal Chand, Farkhanda Amjad Warriach and Naheed Shahid Ali.
