LAHORE - Jail authorities have prepared a set of proposals to make changes in the services rules regarding recruitment and promotion procedures of the jail officials, sources in the Prison Department disclosed on Thursday. They said three to four meetings in this regard had been held to discuss the issue at length and meetings were attended by senior officers of Prisons, Home Department and other officers of departments concerned as well. A senior officer of prison department seeking anonymity said that recently recruitments of number of cadres in prisons were postponed only for the reason that rules were going to be amended and recruitments would be made in accordance with the new amended rules. Sources said that as per new rules height of Warder would be increased such as if it was required 5 feet 7 inches earlier now it would be about 7 feet and 8 to 9 inches, Warder and Chief Warders were recruited by the department now these posts would be filled through Punjab Public Service Commission. Similarly service period of Assistant Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, Superintendent and DIG would be increased for promotion into next stage. An officer said that decision was taken only to boost up the soft image of the department among the general public and to make the officers more competent, hardworking and energetic. He said within the present security situation prisons needed also more competent soldiers to combat terrorism in good way. As per sources recruitment in the prison department would be made later as per new rules and fresh applications would be invited from the candidates who have already applied for the posts of warder, dark room assistants, drivers, head warders, chief warders and others posts. It is worth mentioning here that a couple of months back department had invited applications from the candidates for the above said posts and good number of candidates had forwarded their applications and had gone through recruitment process like race and physical tests etc.
