LAHORE - The alarming increase in the suicides due to poverty has exposed the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), which was initiated for the financial assistance of the poor. These two gruesome incidents of suicides in the City are sufficient to reveal the miserable failure of the BISP. Khalid Ahmad, a multilingual poet and Nawa-i-Waqt columnist, commenting on the situation said such incidents have been happening from last three years, while the authorities concerned remain silent over the grave economic condition of the people in the country. To a question regarding BISP, he said the PPP-led government should fully focus attention on the alleviation of the poverty. One cannot even pay his electricity bill in Rs1000 and at lest Rs5000 should be provided to each poor family from BISP, he suggested. He, however, said Firdous Ashiq Awan might be the suitable person to reply on such horrible incidents and the performance of her government regarding the fulfilling of her party motto, which is, perhaps, Roti, Kapra Aur Makaan (bread, dress and home). Mohammad Rafiq Ghauri, a renowned columnist, however, said such incidents were the outcome of sheer disappointment prevailing in the society. He said the man should be courageous in circumstances. To a question, Rafiq Ghauri said BISP was a just symbol for the poor and it was the major responsibility of disappointed people to help themselves. Jam Sajjad Hussain
