RAWALPINDI - Tens of hundreds of residents of Pirwadhai and its adjoining areas staged a massive protest demonstration against excessive loadshedding and blocked busiest Peshawar Road by pelting stones on vehicles and damaging pubic property. Police also baton charged the protestors and fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob that left reportedly 10 persons injured. The enraged protestors also torched a vehicle and attacked traffic police check post at Meharabad and pelted police and public vehicles, police mobile vans with stone smashing their windowpanes. Rescue 1122 shifted the injured persons to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. According to details, some residents of Misrial gathered at Chuher Chowk and blocked Peshawar Road for traffic during a protest against unannounced loadhsedding. After passage of some time, some more residents joined them and the angry mob started march towards Piwadhai Mor chanting slogans against the government and WAPDA officials. The angry mob including children, youngsters and even old men carrying sticks, rods and bamboo sticks also ransacked traffic police check post at Meharabad due to which a heavy contingent of police started baton charge and fired teargas shells to disperse the people. On this, the situation got tense and the angry mob pelted police, its mobile vans and public transport and private vehicles with stones denting and smashing their windowpanes. They also uprooted the huge billboards and other advertisements boards placed with Peshawar Road. A total of 10 persons got injured during police action that included baton charge and teargas shell firing. Police also beat an old man with sticks. Some protestors dragged heavy blocks and other barricades into the road making it block for traffic. Protestors also set ablaze a vehicle parked on the roadside and uprooted barriers fitted along footpath to protest against use of force by the police. Traffic remained paralysed for many hours in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad-22 Number, Saddar, Qasim Market, Chairing Cross and its adjacent roads, Misrial Road, Peshawar Road, Westridge, Bakery Chowk, Ratta Road, IJ Principal Road, Nescom Hospital Road. Thousands of light and heavy vehicles were seen stuck on the all roads, as the enraged protesters blocked routes. Till the filling of this report, Peshawar Road was presenting the scene of battlefield while the tension between protestors and police were still under way. Peshawar staff reporter add: In the wake of prolonged and unscheduled power outages, thousands of people from various localities of Peshawar staged protest demonstrations against Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) here on Friday. A large number of people participated in the protest demonstrations staged at Dala Zak Road and Pajgi Road despite scorching heat. They chanted full-throated slogans against the government, blocked roads and burnt tyres. They were of the view that the frequent power outages put halt to their businesses and they were unable to attend their routine duties. They warned that they would continue their protests against the government and Pesco until they take notice of the prolonged and unscheduled loadshedding in their areas. The people of these areas also complained regarding the shortage of water, as in the absence of electricity their tube wells remained non-functional to supply water to their houses.
