Three policemen were killed and two others wounded Wednesday in a gunfight with militants in a northwest town near Pakistan's restive Swat valley, police said. The clashes began at around 3:00 am (2200 GMT) in the rural town of Chakdara, in Lower Dir district bordering Swat, after dozens of militants gathered outside Malakand University. "Three policemen were martyred and two others were wounded when militants fired a rocket on a police patrol vehicle," district police chief Khurshid Khan said. Intense gunfire broke out after the rocket attack but the militants eventually fled, abandoning two vehicles and a rifle, he said. "The militant casualties could not be known but drops of blood indicated injuries or deaths," Khan said.
