ISLAMABAD - Governor Punjab Salman Taseer on Tuesday evening held separate meetings with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari in which political situation, in the backdrop of Governor Rule in the province, was discussed. The sources informed TheNation that both the meetings were of great significance, as Prime Minister Gilani wanted immediate lifting of the Governor Rule and as confidence-building measures. He also wanted reversal of the changes made in the top bureaucracy in Punjab. Governor Punjab during his meeting with the President briefed him on his failure to contain the joint protest of lawyers and political parties on March 15. He put the whole blame on the law enforcement agencies and administration which tilting toward Nawaz Sharif had not only allowed him to come out of his Model Town residence, rather let him proceed outside the provincial capital leading thousands of the marchers. The sources close to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that it had been decided in principle to show the door to Governor Punjab Salman Taseer as it is badly needed for mending fences with Mian Nawaz Sharif. However, for the time being he was asked to continue. The sources also said that President Zardari was annoyed with Governor Punjab for painting a wrong picture about Punjab affairs, which ultimately let down the government on so many fronts. The sources in Pakistan People's Party said that a few names, including veteran PPP leader Mushtaq Awan, were under consideration for the Punjab Governorship but the final decision in this connection would be taken by the party leadership after the Central Executive Committee meeting of the party on Thursday.
