MARDAN - Two watchmen were seriously injured when militants blew up a boys’ high school in Katlang in the early hours of Saturday.

Police and local sources said the explosives planted at the building of Government Boys High School in Babuzai, Katlang, went off early in the morning and the explosions were heard far and wide causing destruction of three rooms, three offices and partially damaged the building.

Two watchmen identified as Waqif Khan, son of, Raza Khan and Iftikhar, son of Mihtab Khan were seriously injured. Sources further said that the watch men were entangled in the building materials and local people rescued them and shifted them to district headquarter (DHQ) hospital Mardan, where there condition is reported to be stable. For the last several weeks, militants have stepped up their activities in Mardan district and attacked several girls and boys schools in rural areas in the limits of Chura, Jabar and Katlang police stations.

Sources further said that few days ago militants have also blown up the house of a former employee of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Amir Rehman, in Dheri Lakpani in Katlang area. The explosion also damaged four other houses in the surrounding area. Militants also targeted telecommunication towers in the district.

 Sources further said that few weeks ago militants also targeted Government Girls High School in Shah Dhand Baba in the limits of the Par Hoti Police Station in which two persons including a cop were killed and three police constables among seven others sustained injuries. The sources said that the militants have set up hideouts in different parts of the city and especially in the rural areas and have started sabotage activities. Rise in the militant activities in Mardan district, over the last few weeks has created uncertainty among the people. Following the incident, police launched search operation in the area but no arrest was made. They registered an FIR against unidentified militants under section 3/4 Exp, Sub-Act- 427 and 7ATA.
