KARACHI (INP) - The consumers have expressed resentment over Rs 6 per kg increase in price of sugar at Utility Stores across the country.

The citizens were of the view that the minister for production has repeatedly claimed facilitating the masses through Utility Stores Corporation (USC) but on the other hand prices of various commodities have been increased during recent weeks. They also complained of quality and quantity of the commodities sold at USC.

The consumers said that open market prices and USC prices were almost parallel then what was justification to purchase items from USC when they give no relief.

On the other hand, USC was of the view that increase in sugar price from Rs42/kg to Rs48/kg was to balance the difference between USC prices and open market prices. Sugar in retail market was being sold at Rs55/kg to Rs56/kg, the USC said.

Meanwhile, the sugar mills sources said that 2.8 million tonnes sugar has been produced during current month. During current year 4.8 million tonnes of sugar production was expected which was 6 lakh tonnes surplus to the country’s requirements.
