LAHORE - Pakistan People’s Party Punjab and sizeable number of representatives of the civil society protested on Monday outside the Lahore Press Club to condemn the recent recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology on the marriage age and second marriage vociferously describing these as anti-women and amounting to child abuse.
Among those who were present on the occasion were Jugno Mohsin, Bushra Aitzaz, Neelam Husnain, President Women Wing and Jehan Ara Wattoo and many others.
Shaukat Basra, Asef Khan of Human Rights Wing and others delivered speeches rejecting the retrogressive recommendations of the Council adding that they would continue the campaign and would resist the legislation if pushed.
There were about 400 protesters who were chanting anti-Council of Islamic Ideology slogans demanding its liquidation which consisted of clerics who were blind of appreciating the imperatives of the modern time.
It was also revealed that they had launched online- petition which had already been signed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as the first signatory.
The organizers also disclosed that they would be launching a campaign of securing signatures against the recommendations of the Council and they hoped that petition might bear hundred of thousands of signatures disapproving the recommendations of the Council as discriminatory and tyrannical.
