islamabad - President Mamnoon Hussain has underlined the need to focus on acquiring modern science, engineering and technical education for attaining not only academic excellence but also national socio-economic benefits.

Addressing the convocation ceremony of Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) here on Tuesday, the president emphasised that scientific research and education lead a nation to progress and development. He called for applying new ideas and technologies to enhance educational standards of academic institutions and impart quality education.

The president said that Pakistan is going through challenging times and the country’s economy has suffered due to various reasons. In order to put Pakistan back on trajectory of growth and progress, it is imperative to focus on scientific research and education, added the president.

The president stated that developed countries are increasingly relying on use of modern technology and scientific research in developing and expanding their economies, adding that Pakistan should also focus on these aspects for attaining economic growth. Stressing that education is the only way forward to attain collective national development, the president called upon academic institutions to prepare them for meeting future challenges.

He called for making science a source of national progress, adding that its fruits should reach the door of common man in the form of improving their quality of life.

The president said that the government is taking measures to revive country’s economy. He expressed hope that proposed Pak-China Economic Corridor project would bring about economic revolution and stability in Pakistan. He also called for national unity for attaining collective national development.

The president also underscored the need for paying special attention on girls education, adding that women have an equal role to play on the road to national progress.

He called for focusing on the training and modern education for girls so that they are able to contribute significantly toward country’s progress and growth keeping in view their Pakistani identity.

The president emphasised on making concerted efforts to curb corruption and called upon the nation to discourage corrupt elements. He stated that promotion of education is his top priority adding that he would continue making efforts in this regard. On the occasion, the president also distributed degrees and certificates among the successful students.

Congratulating the successful students of PIEAS, the president called upon them to focus on their professional development and positively contribute to the welfare of the country and humanity. He also lauded the faculty of PIEAS for providing excellent education in disciplines of engineering, natural sciences and formal sciences.
