VEHARI - People are facing multiple problems due to non-issuance of computerised number plates of vehicles by the Excise Department.

Since January, 2012, plates are not being issued. Excise and Taxation officer Chaudhary Muhammad Ikram said that the government had a contract with a company but the contract was not extending. Common people are facing hardships while driving. The ETO said that the department was managing plates for yellow cabs but for other vehicles it was not possible. He added that the inspector general of police had directed the traffic police not to challan the citizen for unavailability of plates.

On the other side, citizens were of the view that the government was earning revenue in shape of challans. When asked, DSP (Traffic) Raja Shahid Nazeer said that the traffic police officials had been ordered not to challen the vehicles having a receipt from the excise office.

But, the excise department has not issued receipts of registration request because this receipt is computerised and the actual fee of registration is mentioned on it while the department charges some unlawful fees from the applicant.
