ISLAMABAD - Vowing to diffuse tension between the two major opposition parties in the Parliament — PML-N and JUI-F — Jamiat Ulema-e-Isalm (Fazl) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman Thursday called on senior PML-N stalwart and Leader of Opposition in Senate, Senator Ishaq Dar in his chamber at the Parliament House. The sources aware of the development informed that the JUI-F leader and PML-N senior leader discussed the major causes for increasing rifts between both the parties. Maulana Fazlur Rehman during the meeting also inquired from the Leader of Opposition in the Senate that whether Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was issuing statements against JUI-F in his personal capacity or it was the party policy of PML-N.Maulana Fazlur Rehman after the meeting told reporters that both prior to this, they were not in contact with major opposition party, PML-N, and now the parties had exchanges their reservations with each other. He said that there should not be difference within the opposition as these would prove useful for the government and the issues should be settled through debate. “The opposition should make a consensus policy on matters of national interest,” he added. He also said that the nomination of woman parliamentarian, Tehmina Doultana by the PML-N for the chairpersonship of parliamentary committee on appointment of chief election commissioner (CEC) was the clear proof of non-seriousness of the opposition towards issues. About Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri’s remarks against PML-N, JUI-F said that Haideri had reacted on the behaviour of opposition. About the resumption of NATO supplies, he said that there was confusion on the issue. “The government cannot ignore the parliamentary recommendations on supplies’ resumption and future terms of engagement with US as this would create as impression that state institutions on national security were compromising on national solidarity,” he added. He also said that the country had suffered losses of 70 billion dollars in the war on terror and now the now the country’s interest could not be compromised just only for one billion dollar by resuming NATO supplies. He also viewed that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s conviction by Supreme Court had weakened the government’s position internationally and US was exploiting the situation. Maulana further said that all the state institutions including army and ISI would have to make fresh their rules of business keeping in view the recommendations of the Parliament. There had emerged rifts between PML-N and JUI-F when Syed Khurshid Shah, federal minister and senior PPP leader, got elected as the chairman of the parliamentary committee on appointment of chief election commissioner with the help of single vote of JUI-F lawmaker and former Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri. The committee consists of six members each from the treasury as well as opposition benches of both the Houses of the Parliament and Khurshid Shah only needed one vote from the opposition side for his election as its chairman. The other day, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan severely criticized JUI-F ‘s role being an opposition party in the Parliament and questioned that the party should make it clear whether it was sitting on the treasury or opposition benches.Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri reacting on Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s statement Thursday said that the opposition did not accept PML-N leader Mr Khan as Leader of the Opposition and he and his party played the role of friendly opposition in the centre during the last four years only just to save PML-N’s government in Punjab.
