Fazl wants structural changes in ECP

ISLAMABAD - Expressing serious reservations over the Election Commission of Pakistan Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman wants to see structural changes in the ECP to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country.
Talking to media persons here on Saturday Rehman said that powerful people had used the weaknesses in the ECP to their advantage and stressed the need for bringing reforms in it to avoid lapses in the electoral process in future.
To a question he refuted the demand of ballots verification in four constituencies by Imran Khan and said that instead of four constituencies the whole of the election should be reviewed as other political parties too had shown their reservations and levelled charges of rigging in their constituencies.
To a question Rehman said that instead of character assassination of others, Imran should explain his position on use of billions of rupees in his election campaign.
Expressing his dissatisfaction over the overall role of media, Rehman said that in his view the media has crossed the limits of freedom of expression and waywardness which has no place in any civilised society.  He further said that one could have complaints and reservations against any institution but the complaints and protest should be within some defined limits and in his view the media has crossed these limits.
To another question he said the incumbent government has opened too many fronts in its one-year rule and they should recheck their strategy as, according to Rehman, the governments would function not on the basis of its strength in the Parliament but on its prudent and efficient policies.
