ISLAMABAD-Shoaib Khan of Peshawar stunned 5th seed Barkatullah also from Peshawar in the 1st Hascol National Ranking Tennis Championships U-18 singles first round match here at the Senator Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex on Tuesday.

The match lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes, as Shoaib Khan lost the first set 4-6, but bounced back in style to take the second set 6-4 and third set on tiebreak 7-6 (2). It is pertinent to mention here that in the previous tournament, he upset top junior Muzammil in straight sets.

The U-18 category of the event witnessed two more upsets when Huzaifa Abdul Rehman of Mangla upset 6th seed Asadullah Khan of Peshawar and unseeded Abdal Haider brushed aside Saqib Omer of Peshawar in well-contested two sets match 6/4, 7/6 (1).

Meanwhile in the first round of men’s singles, Raja Shahid, Syed Nofil Kaleem, Shahzad Khan, Muzammil Murtaza, Heera Ashiq, Barkatullah, Abdal Haider and M Abid sailed through to the second round.

The match of the day was played between young Abdal Haider and former Davis Cupper Rashid Malik. In the blistering heat, both the players were involved in long baseline rallies and keep their respective serves and the score reached 6-6, however, in the tiebreak, Abdal prevailed and won it 7-6 (4). Realising that he gave it all, Rashid Malik shook hands and awarded the match to Abdal.  In the men’s doubles first round, Babar Ali/Ahmed beat Abbas/Jehanzaib 6-3, 6-1, Mudassar/Muzammil beat Shahzad/Shahid 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 and Aqeel/Heera beat M Abid/Usman Rafiq 6-3, 6-1.
