THE competition for the title of the World’s Biggest Liar has taken place in the UK.

The annual contest is held at The Bridge Inn in Santon Bridge, a hamlet of the Lake District. The Huffington Post reports that the event was founded in honour of Will Ritson, the landlord of the Bridge Inn in the 19th century. Ritson was renowned for his own tall tales.

Competitors are given five minutes to impress the judges with an outrageous but convincing lie. Last year’s winner of the title of World’s Biggest Liar was nuclear plant worker Glen Boyland, who won after telling an unlikely story about racing snails with Prince Charles.

Proceedings are sponsored by local brewer Jennings, which has also produced a World’s Biggest Liar ale to commemorate the event.

Politicians and lawyers are reputedly barred from entering, as they are considered to “have an unfair advantage”. –HP
