KARACHI - Vice Admiral Azher Shamim on Saturday took over the charge of Commander Karachi. In capacity of Commander Karachi, the Admiral would be In-charge of all the naval commands and units ashore at Karachi. The Change of Command ceremony was held at PNS Bahadur where the outgoing Commander Karachi Vice Admiral Saleem Ahmed Meenai handed over the command to the newly appointed Commander Karachi. Vice Admiral Azher Shamim joined Pakistan Navy in 1971 and got commissioned in the Operations Branch in 1974. He joined Naval Aviation in 1976 and served there for a long period. During his career, he has commanded a Minesweeper - PNS MUJAHID, P-3C and Fokker Maritime Squadrons, a Frigate - PNS ZULFIQUAR, 18th Frigate Squadron and Auxiliary and Mine-warfare Squadrons. His staff appointments include Pakistans Defence Attache in Kuala Lumpur, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Plans), Chief Staff Officer to Commander Karachi, Directing Staff at the National Defence University Islamabad, Director General Training and Joint Warfare, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Projects), Director General Maritime Security Agency and Commander Logistics Pakistan Navy. He is a graduate of US Naval War College and did Armed Forces War Course from National Defence University, Islamabad. In recognition to his meritorious services, Vice Admiral Azher has been awarded with Sitara-e-Basalat and Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military).
