ISLAMABAD - Minster for Finance, Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Wednesday informed the Upper House of the Parliament that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had collected a total of Rs 152,520.2 million taxes from six mobile phone companies operating in the country against their declared income during past four years.

In his written reply to a question, the Minister for Finance stated that FBR had collected Rs 31,136.7 million taxes in year 2008, Rs 40,045.9 million in 2009, Rs 37,148.2 million in 2010, and Rs 44,189.4 million in 2011 from the mobile companies, including PMCL (Mobilink), Telenor Pakistan (Pvt) Limited, Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (Ufone), CMPAK (Zong) Warid Telecom and M/S Pakcom.

The minister said that under Article 78 of the Constitution, all revenues received by the federal government form a part of the Federal Consolidated Fund.

The receipts from various taxes collected from mobile phone companies operating in the country has become a part of the Federal Consolidated Fund and this revenue also become part of the overall balance in the Federal Consolidated Fund, from where all expenditures are authorized by the National Assembly, he said. As such, it is not possible to correlate specific receipts with specific expenditure, he added.

During question hour, Senator Nuzhat Sadiq asked the Minister for Finance, Revenue and Planning and Development to inform the Upper House about the rate of pension that was admissible to the widows of employees of the State Bank of Pakistan and the rate of increase made in the pension of the widows during current fiscal year.

Replying to another question Minister for Finance, Revenue and Planning, Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaik stated in a written reply that the government has granted no pension increase in the year 2010, however, it was increased between 2006 to 2009 as per the retirement date of the employees.

He further stated that from July 01, 2011, 20 percent pension increase was allowed to the pensioners /family pensioners who have been retired/expired on or before 30-06-2010.

About the rate of increase made in the pension during current fiscal year 2012, the minister stated that 13 percent pension increase has been allowed to the pensioners/family pensioners who have retired/expired on or before 30-06-2012 and it would be effective from 01-07-2012.
