MIRPUR (AJK) - In response to the recent invitation by the AJK government, for amendments to interim AJK Constitution (Act-1974), the Jammu & Kashmir Liberation League (JKLL) has proposed federal democratic system based on two houses of the AJK Parliament, representing the whole state.

The JKLL has observed since Act-1974 does not fulfil the objectives of freedom movement and political and geographical entity of the Jammu and Kashmir State, it is proposed that sitting AJK Legislative Assembly may be dissolved and constitute assembly may be elected on the basis of adult franchise and the principal of the proportionate representation.

A parliamentary committee comprising lawmakers, from both the treasury and opposition benches, in the AJK Legislative Assembly has already been formed to formulate proposals for introducing necessary amendments to Act 1974, by inviting all reputed political parties of AJK, both in and outside the Legislative Assembly and the AJK Council, lower and upper houses of the AJK parliament respectively.

Unveiling the proposed amendments at a news conference here on Wednesday, JKLL President Justice (r) Abdul Majeed Mallick said that his party had strongly proposed to the AJK government to formally enter into a 'Stand-still Agreement' with the government of Pakistan till the time of Plebiscite or final settlement of Jammu & Kashmir dispute under which the Government of Pakistan may control the responsibilities of Defence, Foreign Affairs, Communication, Currency and coinage of Jammu Kashmir State.

"It has also been emphasized that the promulgation of the constitution was essential to naturalise political and legal effect of the constitution already enforced in the Indian-held Jammu & Kashmir State, which empowers President and Parliament of India to legislate in respect of special subject with the consent of the State Assembly", Justice (r) Mallick said.

AJK remote areas being electrified on war footing: The AJK government has launched an integrated plan to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the consumers besides electrification of far-flung mountainous terrains, official sources said.

The State Electricity Department sources told this scribe here on Tuesday that the AJK government was determined for the speedy progress of electricity sectors in AJK including the populous and industrial Mirpur division.

The sources said that special attention was being given to ensure smooth supply of electricity to consumers across AJK without any discrimination. He said that for this purpose additional transformers were being provided to the electricity department for installation at the recommended sites.

Referring to Mangla Dam Raising Project, the sources said that the gigantic project will, indeed, usher in new era of speedy progress and prosperity through bringing about green revolution in the country besides bringing about exceptional socio-economic uplift and prosperity in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, especially in Mirpur district. They said that the attractive incentives package for compensation of the affectees of the raising project had been offered.

The sources pointed out that the AJK government had already chalked out a broad-based plan to electrify all the remaining portion of the state including remote and far-flung areas by the end of next year.
