A security perspective

This is with reference to the article titled 'Problems of Pak-US Security' published in your newspaper on September 16, 2008 at a time when there was every possibility of an American attack on FATA. I appreciate the views of your foreign affairs analyst, Sajjad Shaukat, who has logically proved that security of Pakistan and US, is inter-related. He has elaborated upon this complex issue with references to the old model of security based upon power factor that has now become redundant. It cannot be applied in present era as the sole super power has already failed in coping with the Islamic militants through the military paradigm. Unsuccessful misadventures of the American forces in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia etc. are living examples in this regard. He is right in saying that US will commit another blunder if it goes for her prospective invasion of FATA. He is also right in saying that security is a two-way traffic; if America needs security, it has to provide the same to Pakistan. -MONA SALEEM, Lahore, via e-mail, September 16.
