Leftists demand reopening of Abbasi case

KARACHI (PPI) - Communist and leftists parties launched a countrywide protest and demanded the reopening of Comrade Nazeer Abbasi case, which was killed allegedly by the intelligence agencies during Gen Zia regime. In this regard a protest demonstration was also held outside Karachi Press Club on Thursday. Workers from leftist student organizations, political parties, trade unions, besides large number of civil society people took part in it. The demonstration was jointly organized by Labour Party Pakistan, Pakistan National Workers Party, Awami Party Pakistan, Communist Mazdor Kisaan Party and Communist Party of Pakistan. The demonstrations was led by Akhtar Hussain Advocate, Ijaz Ghani, Mirza Maqsood, Dr Mazhar and Nasir Mansoor. The protestors were holding placards and chanting slogans against the intelligence agencies. Addressing the demo, protest leaders said that many workers and leaders of communist parties and progressive parties were illegally kept in custody by intelligence agencies and brutally tortured during Zia regime. Speakers further highlighted that Nazeer Abbasi Shaheed was also tortured to death but the FIR of the case was still to be registered, despite several complaints by his widow. The protestors demanded the Government of Pakistan as well as the Chief Justice of Pakistan to form a commission under the chair of judge from Sindh High Court in order to investigate the case of Nazeer Abbasi Shaheed.
