General Pervez Musharraf collected a hefty Rs. 250 million in 4 hours on a live telethon arranged by a private television channel. A few callers asked some harsh questions which General Musharraf promised to answer at appropriate time. But the majority of callers appreciated his efforts to help the country by collecting funds for relief and rehabilitation of the affected. General Musharraf acted wisely by establishing a charitable foundation to collect these donations and spend the money on projects that would improve life of the poor. It is said that politicians have nine lives and a general only one. If General Musharraf succeeds in establishing a political party of lower and middle classes and is able to win a few seats in the coming elections, it will be a great achievement. The silent majority of people of Pakistan is fed up with the present lot of political parties due to their dynastic politics that has no room for democracy within their own parties. The party head nominates virtually all office bearers down to the lowest level at his personal whims. Nor is there any accountability of these political parties by the election commission. Only two parties are organized with proper membership record and proper worker cadres. There is no doubt a political party with the manifesto to make Pakistan what its founder Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had envisioned is sorely needed. Musharraf has it in him to be the Kamal Ataturk of Pakistan. -ENGR. S.T. HUSSAIN, Lahore, September 15.
