islamabad  - Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) stalwart Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Thursday said that elections should be held in time in a free, fair and transparent manner and political parties would go against any move to postpone the general elections.

“Law and order situation could not be a valid plea to postpone elections as Iran and Afghanistan held election during war and violence,” said Yusuf Raza Gilani, addressing a press conference. He was accompanied by another former PM Raja Pervez Ashraf.

Tehreek-e-Islami Allama Arif Wahidi and Allama Shabbir Maisani announced to support the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidates in the upcoming elections, 2013, on the occasion.

Arguing to hold upcoming election in time, Gilani commented that the election postponement would be dangerous and political parties are in favour of timly election. Taking credit of the 20th amendment introduced in PPP’s era, the former PM from Multan said the last PPP government had ensured credibility of interim government and independence of ECP.

“PPP’s government completed its tenure for the first time which is our achievement,” he said adding that caretaker government and Election Commission of Pakistan should provide security to the party’s received security threats. Another PPP’s former PM Raja Pervez Ashraf said PPP’s government in its tenure raised salaries and pensions public sector employees more than hundred per cent which was unprecedented.  He added that through BISP their government helped millions of people in the country. “PPP government raised pensions and salaries,” he added.

When asked about the alleged NLC scam, he said tat the NLC was capable of building the road in a short time period and it was not a crime.
