Lahore - Pakistan Industrial & Traders Associations Front (PIAF) on Friday showing concerns over the decision of the government to shut markets and shops by 8:00 pm in order to save energy, urged the government to consult the issue with traders.

Chairman Irfan Sheikh said that energy deficit is a long standing issue of the country that have already taken a heavy toll on business and industrial activities and it was the dire need of the country that government should have given top priority and utilized all possible resources to address this national issue.

He said business community is ready to fully cooperate with the government in its initiatives aimed at energy conservation, however, government should utilise all options to save trade and industry from any harmful consequences. He said 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm were peak hours for business during summer season as consumers normally do shopping at night and forcing early closure of markets and shops would not only create difficulties for consumers, it will also prove harmful for business activities. He said that if Government ensures uninterrupted power supply in markets and market close time should gradually be reduced by 10pm to 9 pm; and it should not be imposed at once.  Chairman said that such important decisions never be implemented without consultation with market leaders He said an across the board policy should be adopted in this matter.

“Raising of such issues would be harmful and create negative effect at the time when the local government elections are on full swing” Chairman added.
