LAHORE - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will provide medical equipment worth Rs22.79 million to Government Mian Munshi Hospital.

Commissioner Afghan Refugees Ch Riaz and EDO Health Lahore Dr Zulfiqar Ali signed a MoU at the hospital on Saturday.

Adviser to Chief Minister on Health Kh Salman Rafiq, Director General Health Dr Zahid Pervaiz, Medical Superintendent Dr Muhammad Amir, DOH Dr Saeed and son of founder of Mian Munshi Hospital were also present on the occasion.

Kh Salman Rafiq said that UNHCR has earlier provided Rs 30 million for renovation of maxillofacial ward of Mayo Hospital. The cooperation of philanthropists and donors was important in development of health sector, he added.

The commissioner Afghan refugees assured that the institution would continue financial cooperation for improving the performance of hospitals. He said that Rs30m would be provided for establishing trauma center at Mian Munshi Hospital.

Earlier, the medical superintendent said that there was shortage of doctors and nurses at the hospital. He stressed the need of increasing budget for medicines. Ultrasound machine, colour developer, digital X-ray, ECG machine, refrigerator, microscope, sucker machine, auto chemistry analyzer, traction table with machine, dental unit, autoclave and other equipments would be replaced by the funds to be provided by UNHCR, he informed the meeting.
