ISLAMABAD- The city streets on Monday echoed with "Go Musharraf Go" slogans as the people celebrated his resignation at large. Soon after the former president announced to step down in his televised address to the nation, hundreds of workers of various political parties, civil society's activists, lawyers and general public spontaneously gathered in front of Parliament House, Aabpara Market and Zardari House in the federal capital. Main roads of the city, which were deserted at the time of the 'impatiently awaited speech', witnessed a heavy rush of traffic soon after Musharraf announced to quit the presidency. Many persons among the overjoyed crowds at various places told this scribe that cell phones of their relatives and friends were responding 'busy' as every one were trying to take the lead in spreading the news of Musharraf's ouster. The jubilant inhabitants of the capital city were congratulating one another, chanting anti-Musharraf and pro-democracy slogans and distributed sweets. A group of enthusiastic young students from Balochistan presented traditional folk dance. Activists of the lawyers' movement reached in front of the parliament, where they offered thanksgiving prayers and chanted slogans against Musharraf and his close aides. They shouted, "Hang him up, don't let him go". So pleased were the lawyers and representatives of civil society that they burst into tears while embracing and congratulating each other. While speaking to the ecstatic gathering, Ghazala Minallah, a prominent activist of the movement for reinstatement of the sacked judiciary, demanded of the government to bring Musharraf into court of law instead of giving him the safe passage. She said if the government lets him go without been tried, then it should open the door of all the prisons. Workers of PML-N and PPP also gathered on Constitution Avenue and expressed their delight over the resignation of Pervez Musharraf. Students of the demolished Jamia Hafsa also brought out a rally in Aabpara Chowk, where Omme Hasaan spoke to the gathering and the media men. She criticized the former president in harsh words and warned the present government to learn lesson from the shameful end of the Musharraf regime. She announced to drag the outgoing president into court if he stayed in the country. In response to a question, she said that she would never forgive Musharraf. "He is the killer of hundreds of innocent sons and daughters of the nation, we would not leave him", she said. Activists of the civil society and lawyers, while talking to TheNation, said that they would continue their struggle until the deposed judges are reinstated to the November 3, 2007 position and Musharraf is subjected to trial by the courts. Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, Sharif Pirzada, Malik Qayyum and other close aides of Musharraf would also be brought into court, they said. They also announced a demonstration for the restoration of judiciary in Aabpara today (August 19). Meanwhile, the legal fraternity at District Bar Association (DBA) celebrated resignation of President Pervez Musharraf by marching towards President's Lodge, Army House and dancing at the tune of drumbeat in front of the main gate of the official residence of outgoing president here on Monday. The lawyers, however, said their real celebrations would start after the reinstatement of sacked judges, including Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. As General (retd) Pervez Musharraf announced his resignation, the lawyers present in the bar hall in hundreds shouted emotional slogans and came out of the courts and gathered at Kutchery Chowk and chanted slogans against Musharraf and demanded restoration of deposed judges without further delay. The lawyers led by representatives of Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and DBA started marching towards the Army House passing through the offices of District Coordination Officer (DCO), City Police Officer (CPO) and District Nazim. The marchers saw no hurdle in their way towards the Army House where they had never been allowed. The lawyers gathered in front of the Army House and started dancing and beat drums. They returned to the court premises peacefully as law-enforcers reached late at the spot as they were earlier unaware of the lawyers' programme. The lawyers distributed sweets and exchanged greetings over the resignation of the President. Talking to TheNation, President of LHCBA Sardar Asmatullah said though the lawyers had met one of their demands in the form of President's resignation but their real celebrations would start only after the restoration of deposed judges as there was no obstacle now for the coalition government. Secretary General of DBA Sajid Tanoli said it was result of lawyers' struggle that strengthened the political forces to take action against a military dictator and the resignation of the president dispelled the impression that Pakistan People's Party was not serious in ousting the president. The lawyers decided to celebrate Yaum-i-Nijat) on Tuesday.
