KARACHI - The Sindh Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a bill into law to establish Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University here in Lyari Karachi. The lawmakers said that law for the establishment of the University is aimed at providing educational facilities to the dwellers of Lyari who are the diehard workers of PPP. Law Minister Muhammad Ayaz Soomro said that the provincial government is trying to provide relief to people in Sindh by initiating vast development schemes and establishing educational institutions. He said Lyari is a backward area, where ratio of poverty is more than other parts of the metropolis. The law to establish University is aimed to empower the people of the Lyari through providing education opportunities; he said and added the Sindh government wants to establish Universities in other districts of the province. Sindh Health Minister Dr Saghir Ahmed congratulated the Sindh government over passing of law said that establishment of University is the right of the people of Lyari. Sindh Minister for Katchi Abadis Muhammad Rafique Engineer said that Karachi begins from Lyari, but it has always been neglected by previous governments. He said Lyari was made deprive of health, education and other basic facilities because the people of this area always voted for PPP. MPA Humera Alwani praised the Sindh government for the passage of the law to establish University in Lyari. She said that Karachi University has 13 faculties and 56 departments, but students of rural areas are deprived of right to get admission in the University of provincial capital. PLM-Q MPA Nuzhat Pathan also shared the same views, saying that it is injustice with the students of rural areas not to allow them admission in Karachi University. She also congratulated the Sindh government and said that people of Lyari has played their role in the struggle for democracy. The lawmakers from treasury as well opposition benches also praised the President Asif Ali Zardari and said the Lyari University was the fulfilment of dream of Shaheed leader Benazir Bhutto who always worked for the empowerment of working class. According to the Bill passed into law, the government will also open braches of the Benazir Bhutto University Lyari in the colleges in other districts of province. The law passed by Sindh Assembly also mentioned that 50 percent of the total seats in the University shall be reserved for the bonafide residents of the Lyari, Kemari, Malir and Gadap Towns of Karachi. Meanwhile, the Sindh Assembly unanimously adopted amendments moved by Sindh Minister Muhammad Rafique Engineer which was suggested that in three MPAs nominated by Speaker of Provincial Assembly of Sindh as member Senate of University, at least one MPA would be from the Lyari Town. However, the consideration of 'Sindh Criminal Prosecution Service (Constitution, Functions and Powers) Bill 2009, the 'Peoples University of Medical and Health Sciences for Women, Shaheed Benazirabad (Nawabshah) Bill 2009, and Sindh Land Revenue (Amendment) Bill 2009' was deferred till Monday.
