KARACHI - Karachi Commissioner Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi has directed to abolish any permission to set up bus terminals beneath the bridges and flyovers with immediate effect.He instructed to readjust public transport routes to avoid vehicle entrance in Saddar area.He issued the orders while chairing over the 136th meeting of Regional Transport Authority (RTA) here on Tuesday. The additional commissioners, Traffic DIG Khurram Gulzar, RTA Secretary Basheer Hussain, KMC Transport Department Director Abdul Qadir and other high officials attended the meeting.The Commissioner directed the officials that public interest should be kept supreme before the issuing of new or adjusted route permits and it must be assured that traffic flow will not be disturbed.He directed that all permission letters for setting up bus terminals beneath bridges and flyovers should be cancelled immediately. He said that the Sindh Governor had approved a project to make Saddar a pedestrian-only area and asked the officials for the immediate implementation of the project.He said that Saddar would be transformed into an international standard shopping area for local and foreign visitors.The presence of old public transport vehicles in the city was because of the 1985 ban of route permits of new minibuses and if new route permits were allowed the transporters would bring new buses and old ones could be phased out, he concluded.
