ISLAMABAD - The national selection committee of the Pakistan Hockey Federation Wednesday named a 19-man team for the forthcoming double of international junior hockey events, which would be played in Malaysia and Egypt respectively in March 2009. The selection committee headed by Hasan Sardar announced the names of the selected boys after observing them in the field for a day's trails at Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad. The other members of the selection committee Rana Mujahid, Khalid Bashir, Shafqat Mehmood and Muhammad Shafik were also present on this eve. However, Secretary Ministry of Sports Muhammad Ashraf Khan, secretary PHF Muhammad Asif Bajwa, former Olympian Shahbaz Ahmed Senior, president, Islamabad Hockey Association (IHA) Syed Mustafen Kazmi and other officials of the hockey federation also watched the trails proceeding. Hasan told reporters here after short selection committee meeting that Pakistan junior team would compete in 4-Nation Hockey Tournament in Malaysia, scheduled to be held from March 11 to 15. "Our team will meet with hosts Malaysia, India and Singapore in the four-nation fixture while in the 5-Nation fair we will play against Russia, Malaysia, Italy and Ghana that will be held from March 20 to 27 in Egypt," he described. The chief selector further said that the PHF was focusing on the Asia Cup, as the top teams of the tournament would directly qualify for the next world cup. "We want to give some rest to those players, who are also part of the senior team including Shafqat Rasool and Fraid. However, we selected the team on merit and our boys have abilities to produce good results in the upcoming competitions," he maintained. Responding to a question, former Olympian Hasan Sardar said that Haseem Khan would lead the green shirts in the both tournaments while Toufiq Ahmed would be his deputy. "We are going to give international exposure to five players and we included Khalid Bhatti, Wasif Siddiqui, Mohsin Bila, Usman Tariq and Umer Bhutta for the first time for international competitions," he said. "We have talented players for the national team and they have capabilities to serve the nation in hockey in future. "There was no system to bring up the talent but the current managements is doing well for the promotion of game in the country and we can bring up boys through academies system, as the hockey at school and collage level has been finished, "he observed. Khalid Basheer, a senior member of the selection committee, said that some ex-Olympians were criticizing Pakistan Hockey Federation by they could not produce results during their tenures. "We will give results, as their period has been ended and they should appreciate of efforts of PHF instead of criticising the polices of federation," he mentioned. At this occasion, Muhammad Asif Bajwa announced the names of the officials. "Kawaja Junaid will be the head coach while Danish Kaleem will be his deputy. Ahmed Alam will be coach for the goalkeepers and Asad Abbas will perform the duties of physio during Egypt and Malaysia tours, "he disclosed.
