LAHORE The general council of the Pakistan Olympics Association met here Thursday and discussed the Pakistan players performance in the recently-held South Asian Games in Bangladesh. The meeting which was to be held last month was postponed then due to the busy schedule of the sports federation officials who were preparing the for participation in the games. The POA president Lt Gen (r) Arif Hasan though happy about the performance of some of the athletes who won gold medals as well as he also showed concern on the decline in the number of gold medals won by the players. Arif said that the organising of the National Games at Peshawar would be finalised after the concerned departments report on security situation of the province. He said that he has asked the Pakistan Sports Board to initiate training camps of the athletes preparing for the Commonwealth Games. The general council, he informed, has also given its approval of affiliation to softball federation and Islamabad Olympics Association. Arif further said that the POA has asked the government to acquire services of Chinese and other foreign coaches to train Pakistan players for the future sporting assignments. He said that a 75-member Pakistan contingent will take part in the Commonwealth Games. On National Games, Arif said that the second option of venue was not discussed as yet and things will fall into its place after the security report on Peshawar. He said that the weak areas of the players in wake of the SA Games also come under discussion and efforts will be made to overcome those flaws. He said that Pakistan will prepare for Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Asian Beach Games as Solidarity Games have been cancelled. In Asian Games, Pakistan will take part only in medal prospect events. He further stated that constitutional amendment was made to adjust Islamabad association in the Olympics fold and Fata issue is still under discussion. He said that shooting has been pulled out of the Commonwealth Games while there were high expectations of gold in cricket and football in Dhaka games but the results were unsatisfactory.
